Okay, so what exactly is sweetened condensed milk you ask?
It’s just milk that has been boiled, reduced, and effectively pasteurized. Sugar is then added to sweeten and prolong shelf life. That’s it. Longevity just contains milk and sugar. That’s it.
Sweetened condensed milk provides a concentrated creaminess and sweet, milky flavor to whatever you put it in, without the excess moisture that you get from regular milk.
An unopened can will last at least a year without refrigeration in the pantry. Once open, store in the refrigerator. Opened sweetened condensed milk will keep for up to 3 – 4 weeks in an air-tight container.
Pro Tip: Transfer the milk to a squeeze bottle for refrigerator storage. Works well.
