The Origin Story

Growing up, my family and I ate desserts on any and all occasions. Baking was our expected form of leisure. From Dad s blueberry angel food cake, to Mom s banana bread and chocolate chip cookies, to the rare and personal favorite lemon poppyseed bread.

A dense sweet treat that speaks to me of Louisiana summertime when hot afternoons became the backdrop to plastic-pool playtime, dancing in a backyard sprinkler, and giggling girl birthday parties.

With sunshine coming through the kitchen windows, I d eat popsicles with friends at the counter, asking Mom what she was baking or hoping she would let me cut through the warm cake before it had cooled. This classic treat evokes a carefree summer with childhood friends, either coming home from the swimming pool or dusting off sand from a trip to the beach.
