The Origin Story

Ms. Susan came over to visit when we were little growing up. She took trips with us to the beach, and would almost always speak to my younger brother and me with softened r s, dropped g s, and just enough of a southern drawl to let the youngin s know she was pullin  yer leg . While she was known in East Texas for her longtime endeavors in food, she now brings us one of my dad s favorite homemade holiday snacks: peanuts delicately laced with the perfect stringing of sugar, a southern staple we call peanut brittle.

Ms. Susan has been my mom s childhood best friend of fifty years. When she comes over these days, the house knows laughter. She and her husband will tell stories until my mom s mascara runs and the guests pee their pants. Peanut brittle evokes both the deepest feelings of seasonal nostalgia and the best family memories.
